Us working mums struggle to juggle family and work. But one mum did it differently, becoming the United States Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013, First Lady of the United States when her husband Bill Clinton was president from 1993 to 2001, and First Lady of Arkansas when he was governor from 1979 to 1981, and 1983 to 1992. Next week, she’ll be running for the highest office in the land, and is the first female candidate to be nominated for president. So what are her secrets? We find out.
She Makes Her Presence Felt
There’s no better judge of that than her own daughter Chelsea Clinton who says her mum is not just a good mother, but an exceptional, working one. Hillary would leave notes for Chelsea whenever she’s away on the job, and now FaceTimes her grandkids while running for president.
She Remembers Her Mum
Not many know that Hillary’s late mum, Dorothy Rodnum, was abandoned by her parents at a young age, and later taught her own daughter to be tenacious, outspoken and kind. “She made sure I learned the words of our Methodist faith: ‘Do all the good you can, for all the people you can, in all the ways you can, as long as ever you can,’” Hillary shares.
She Treats Marriage Seriously
Her 41-year marriage to former U.S. president Bill Clinton wasn’t without its ups and downs. The most infamous setback was the Lewinsky scandal in 1998, where Bill allegedly had a sexual relationship with his 22-year-old White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Amidst all that pain and turmoil, Hillary soldiered on, standing firm by her husband’s side. “It was really hard. It was painful. It was something that you just had to get up every day and try to deal with while still carrying on a public set of responsibilities,” she recently shared about overcoming the ordeal.
She Is Publicly Affectionate About Her Grandchildren
You might laugh at the idea of your grandma being president of the United States, but not Charlotte and Aidan Clinton Mezvinsky, Hillary’s two grandchildren. “I have to confess, I talk so much about being a grandmother, now I’m sure I’m going to be talking doubly about being a grandmother,” she says.
She Aimed For Higher Things
Now you’d think Hillary’s childhood ambition was to be the president of the U.S. Wrong. “When I was about 13, I wrote to NASA and asked what I needed to do to try to be an astronaut. And NASA wrote back and said there would not be any women astronauts. And I was just crestfallen,” she shares.
She Earns More Than Her Husband
Even when Bill Clinton was the Governor of Arkansas, Hillary was making more money as a lawyer at Rose Law Firm, earning over US$188,000 ($260,000) that year specialising in patent infringement and intellectual property law, while working pro bono in child advocacy.
SheTalks To The Dead
Uh-oh. Hillary had a habit of talking to dead persons and claims to have chatted with former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Indian leader Mahatma Ganghi. Husband Bill would even vouch for that: “When I served as president, my wife (Hillary) was known to commune with Eleanor on a regular basis. Once, she called me on her way home from Peru to remind me to say that Eleanor had talked to her and reminded her that I should say that.” Yikes!
She Speaks Up For Women And Children
In 1997, Hillary came up with Children’s Health Insurance Program, to help children gain health coverage. She also encouraged immunisation, compulsory mammograms for women and funded research on childhood asthma and prostate cancer.
She Has Good Taste
Apparently, Hillary puts hot sauce on everything she eats, even salad, according to The Wall Street Journal.
She Kicks Bill’s Ass
Literally – according to her. “If I didn’t kick his (Bill Clinton) ass every day, he wouldn’t be worth anything,” Hillary once said about being the woman behind her man. Salute!
