You no longer have to travel all the way to the heartlands for a fun family day out. What we would commonly consider as “neighbourhood” areas can also be packed with exciting activities to make for a memorable family day. Families in the East side, you’ll never be short of bonding time thanks to the following:
#1 Jewel Changi Airport
We’re positive that you would already be all-too-familiar with the attention that the newest addition to Changi Airport is receiving lately. While Jewel Changi Airport is mainly known for its iconic indoor waterfall and fascinating architecture, the mall is also well-equipped with family-friendly facilities to make it an ideal and picturesque location for a family day out.
The Canopy Park. Play attractions like the Sky Nets, Canopy Mazes, and Discovery Slides turn the Canopy Park into an enjoyable indoor garden playground for your little ones. These play attractions vary in design and intensity, and are bound to keep children of all ages—and yes, even adults—suitably entertained. It’s called a Canopy Park for a reason—expect some of these attractions to be located at a height, therefore adding a little thrill and sense of adventure for you and your kids. The Canopy Park is located at Level 5.

The next time you are at Changi Airport, be sure to include a trip down to Jewel, where S E N S E Art Installation lies waiting at the West Trail of the SHISEIDO FOREST VALLEY. As you walk through the forest with purpose in every step, you connect with nature, you ignite your senses, and life becomes an experience again, not just a superficial routine… @shiseido #ShiseidoForestValley #IgniteYourSenses #Shiseido #JewelChangiAirport Credits: @teamlab_borderless
The Shiseido Forest Valley. This garden wonderland houses Jewel’s signature HSBC Rain Vortex amidst scenic walking trails, making it an idyllic setting for you and your kids to immerse fully in the world of nature (sans the intense heat of the outdoors). Photograph moments of your family day out with beautiful natural landscapes as your backdrop, or marvel at the waterfall’s light and sound show that takes place hourly between 8:30pm to 12:30am. Entry points to the Shiseido Forest Valley are located at every level.
Shaw Theatres Jewel. Catch family-friendly movies at Shaw Theatre’s first family hall, Dreamers, only at Jewel Changi Airport. Dreamers aims to create an inviting environment for your young ones with its colourful seats, wall murals, and softer lighting and audio. It even provides beanies for you and your kids to enjoy your movie with maximum comfort. Shaw Theatres is located at #B2-237.
#2 Paya Lebar Quarter
The next new kid on the block in the East is Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ). Home to an extensive range of retail and dining options, PLQ does not fall far behind when it comes to providing family-friendly facilities.
SMIGY PLQ Indoor Playground. SMIGY, the newly-opened indoor playground in PLQ, is a vibrant play paradise for your little ones. It has a total of eight play zones, which feature ball pits, sponge pits, play-pretend zones (complete with costumes and props), obstacle courses, swings, slides, an interactive touchscreen, and even smaller play areas targeted at children of younger ages. This indoor playground is the perfect location for an afternoon of fun and play with your kids. SMIGY is located at #03-05 to 06.
PLQ Open Plaza. Take a break with a cup of coffee in the container cafes along PLQ’s outdoor plaza, all while being able to keep your kids in check as they run about the spacious outdoor space that even includes a flat fountain area for a little water fun.
PLQ Photo Zones. Document your family day out at the various photo zones at PLQ, which also allows you to have your photographs printed for free!
#3 Forest Adventure at Bedok Reservoir
Looking for something more “outdoor”? Give Singapore’s largest tree top adventure park, Forest Adventure, a visit! This attraction has three different courses to cater to both adults and children: the Grand Course, the Junior Course, and the Kids Course.
For families with younger children, opt for the Kids Course that features 22 obstacles and two ziplines, thus ensuring that it does not lag far behind the other more advanced course when it comes to having the right amount of fun and challenge for your little ones. You can even host a birthday party at Forest Adventure as it offers packages for such event, designed to make your child’s birthday experience a unique and highly memorable one.
#4 Wild Wild Wet at Downtown East
After a revamp, Wild Wild Wet is back with new and exhilarating rides for you and your child. For rides that are more kid-friendly, go for the new Kids Zone, a mini water paradise with smaller adaptations of the bigger rides; the Splash Play, a splash zone for kids with jets and water sprays; Yippee!, a shallow sloshing area complete with soft play equipment for kids; and finally, the Professor’s Playground, which is literally a laboratory-themed water playground guaranteed to keep your kids entertained for hours on end.
Wild Wild Wet also provides inflatable floats for its various rides, and life jackets for adults and children for enhanced safety. Additionally, you can request for baby water carriers. Nursing rooms and children’s shower cubicles are also available, so rest assured you will have a fun, safe, and convenient family day out at Wild Wild Wet.
#5 NEWater Visitor Centre
For something less conventional and more educational, plan a family day out at the NEWater Visitor Centre. Learn water conservation tips, step into the NEWater factory to find out how NEWater is made, and explore the Waterwise Arcade at the NEWater Visitor Centre, located at 20 Koh Sek Lim Rd, Singapore 486593.
With its various engaging and educational activities and workshops, you and your little ones will definitely be able to score valuable takeaways from your trip to the centre. However, note that prior booking is required before making your visit to the facility, and such bookings can be made online. Do not worry about having to go through the activities in a big group as the centre is able to cater to smaller groups of visitors as well.
