CNY Spring Cleaning: Age-Appropriate Chores Your Child Can Help With

With the Lunar New Year just around the corner, it’s time to prepare your home for the upcoming festivities. This means deep spring cleaning – getting rid of clutter, scrubbing every household nook and cranny, organising furniture and even hanging up CNY-appropriate decorations.

But this monumental task doesn’t have to fall solely on your shoulders! Get the children involved with the household chores and have them hone essential life skills in the process. Here’s a checklist (sorted according to age) that’ll get your little helper started.

Ages 3+

  • Placing toys and books into their rightful places
  • Putting dirty clothes into the hamper
  • Help with the laundry: help sort clean clothes, folding socks and washcloths
  • Put away clean utensils
  • Keeping their shoes properly
  • Sweep the floor (with a child size broom)

Ages 5+

  • Sort out their belongings according to: Keep, Donate and Recycle
  • Wipe down dirty toys with a wet washcloth
  • Clean low surfaces (such as chairs and coffee table) with wet washcloths or clean socks over their hands
  • Fold clothes and towels for storage
  • Wash non-fragile dishes (don’t forget to give your child dish-washing gloves!)
  • Water houseplants

Ages 10+

  • Wipe down the inside of the fridge
  • Lightly clean the bathroom (wipe the sink, mirror and toilet)
  • Bathe house pets
  • Vacuum the floor
  • Organise study and bedroom area
  • Empty the trash
  • Sorting out CNY food (dry goods and snacks)

Ages 13+

  • Dust ceiling fans
  • Wipe down window blinds
  • Mop the floor
  • Clean the kitchen
  • Wash basic laundry
  • Clean the shower/bathtub
  • Ironing and hanging of clothes
  • Change the bed sheets
  • Hang up CNY decorations
  • Repainting walls
