Chiltern House Preschool is a bilingual preschool offering programmes and childcare for children Pre-Nursery level to Kindergarten 2. With 5 centres across Singapore, Chiltern House Preschool strives continuously to recreate the nurturing qualities of home – warmth, security and love – whilst ensuring that children grow up confident, independent and well prepared for primary school.
Renowned for the quality of its Mandarin curriculum and ensuring that students leave effectively bilingual, Chiltern House Preschool has a strong system in place to improve children’s English and Mandarin literacy. In Pre-Nursery and Nursery 1, each class is run by 2 teachers, one who communicates only in Standard British English and one who communicates only in Standard Mandarin. Using this method, students learn to code switch naturally and with ease. They are taught using a fully bilingual programme to lay a strong foundation in both languages. From Nursery 2 to Kindergarten 2, students have both specific English and Mandarin sessions daily.
The full curriculum includes Mandarin, Language and Literacy (using the Oxford Reading Tree scheme), Maths, Cookery, Research (Science and Technology), Art and Craft, Physical Education and Mindfulness. Speech & Drama and Music & Movement are also conducted weekly with specialist educators. The programme includes field trips, special events and assemblies. There is a Learning Support Department to support individual children’s needs.
At Chiltern House Preschools, each classroom is set up with various learning centres. Through these learning centres, e.g. language, maths, art and research, the children are given opportunities to explore and experiment during activity time to enhance their self-development in all areas. Some centres may be set up to coincide with the theme or topic of the week, while other centres will also be set up to build on the current interests of the children.
With an excellent student to teacher ratio (two teachers to a class of twelve to sixteen students), each teacher has ample opportunity to follow each child’s progress in detail. Teachers can offer extra help in any area where it may be needed and to enrich the programme for those students whose ability necessitates it. Children are often divided into small numbers for certain areas of the curriculum and given the opportunity to work together, with the teacher present as a guide, mentor or observer.
Chiltern House Preschool’s teachers are highly qualified in early childhood education and experienced in their specialist fields. Chiltern House Preschool runs a continuous programme of staff training, ensuring that teachers upgrade their skills on a regular basis and remain up to date and ahead of changes within the early education sector. They also run a teacher-mentor scheme, whereby senior teachers serve as mentors to younger or newly-qualified teachers, ensuring that the highest quality of education and service is maintained at all times.
