Singapore recently ranked second in terms of performance in three core subjects—mathematics, science, and reading—according to the latest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) study. While this is great news, some parents still find it challenging to develop their child’s learning capability, particularly in reading. A child who is good at reading comprehension understands the stories and subjects better, which results in better academic performance.
One of the most effective ways a parent can improve comprehension is by reading aloud. How so?
#1 Emotions are conveyed in a better way
Reading aloud allows you to connect with your child and portray the right emotions attached to a story. You’re able to demonstrate and inject the right feelings, giving your child a better idea on how to relate to the reading material.
#2 It opens an opportunity for a meaningful discussion
By reading aloud, you are stimulating your child to imagine the scenarios in their head and to think even more while listening to you. It allows them to ask questions or clarify because you are there to give them answers. You can add your own anecdotes while reading to them to make it easier for your child to understand the story. With this, your reading session also becomes a venue for conversation.
#3 They develop an appreciation for books
Hearing you read stories passionately will inspire them to do the same. They pick up on your rhythm and intonation and are more likely to learn from it. Remember, kids learn better when people around them model a certain behaviour. Read books of different genres and see how they react to give you an idea what they like most.
#4 It makes complex ideas more relatable
Kids are better at listening than reading especially if they’re only just beginning to learn. By reading aloud, you’re helping them break down complex ideas that they wouldn’t understand if they read them on their own. You can also ask them to retell the story to check if they understood what you just read to them.
#5 It teaches them how to pronounce words correctly
Reading comprehension is not just about understanding what they read; it is also about developing their fluency in the language. By reading aloud, they learn how to pronounce words correctly. If you encounter challenging words while reading to them, make the most out of your chance to teach them what it means so that it adds up to their knowledge.
