SC Preschool Awards 2017: Best in Character Development

Poised at the forefront of providing quality pre-school education, PPIS Child Development Centres were one of the first to introduce a play-based approach in the 1980s, as using play as a stimulus for learning ensures that the experience remains an enjoyable one for children. With more than 34 years of experience, PPIS Child Development Centres now have 7 childcare centres with a total enrolment of more than 500 children.

At PPIS Child Development Centres, the children are introduced to age-appropriate character traits that are important to their personal growth as well as their growth within the community. This is done explicitly in how their educators model and bring basic traits through fun and creative classroom activities such as learning stories, role-play and physical education.

PPIS Child Development Centres strive to facilitate learning by engaging children in learning through purposeful play and providing opportunities for quality interaction. The rich and active learning environment includes both indoor and outdoor activities to promote the development of children’s critical thinking skills, supports children’s enthusiasm and in-depth investigations and explorations of their environment with a wide variety of materials, individually and with others.

They also place a great emphasis to include family engagement due to the importance of consistency between the home and the school’s programme. The school communicates with and encourages families to participate in ways that are comfortable for each family. Family engagement includes activities like participation in the centre’s events, newsletters, parent-child activities, curriculum sharing and reciprocal sharing of information about children’s development and progress.

As part of their quality improvement plans this year, PPIS Child Development Centres enhanced their pedagogical approach and invested in professional development training for teachers to better support children’s learning and development. About 14 teachers attended Special Needs courses to better equip themselves and support inclusion programmes in their respective centres. PPIS Child Development Centres have met the quality standards in areas such as Curriculum, Pedagogy and Health, Hygiene & Safety.

PPIS Child Development Centres have embarked on several efforts to ensure balanced and holistic learning for children. The Bukit Batok Centre was awarded the School Heritage Champion Award 2017 by National Heritage Board for their initiative to introduce National Heritage to their children. They have also committed to providing healthy and balanced meals for children in school, a programme that covers the physical, intellectual and psychological aspects of children in nurturing healthier and happier children.

In addition to engaging in community involvement through visits to Senior Care Centres, children at PPIS Child Development Centres have also been introduced to S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) topics and have been exposed to coding and robotics through hands-on learning activities to spur their interest in those subjects.

PPIS Child Development Centres have a team of highly qualified and experienced early childhood educators that embodies their mission and core values. At PPIS Child Development Centres, it’s not just about learning, but the joy that comes with it. Every learning experience is a happy one so that parents can have peace of mind knowing that their children will enjoy going to school every day.
