To find out more about what goes into being a brand founder/mumtrepreneur while managing the household, we had a lovely chat with the mom of four:

  1. What sparked your interest in aromatherapy?

It was through the search for natural plant-based massage oils that opened my eyes to the world of aromatherapy. With that interest, I took on a distance-learning programme on herbal medicine to study the root of aromatherapy and subsequently, plants and their healing benefits. With every visit to a farm, I end up learning more through my interactions with farmers as they share a lot of valuable knowledge.

  2. How often do you use aromatherapy products in your own house?

Daily; because I incorporate aromatherapy into my everyday facial and body products. I carry a bottle of tea tree oil in my first aid pouch every day because in the case of stress-induced surprise pimples, this oil is very handy. Few people may be aware but essential oils and extracts are in almost every beauty product these days. I also use the nebulisers at home at least once a week.

  3. Do you use any aromatherapy methods on your children? If so, what do you use it for?

I always give them massages to help them sleep. They are still young so I am careful with the essential oil dilutions.

  4. What drove you to start this business?

It started off as a casual hobby and I had a routine of massaging the kids and my husband at home. It grew into a passion and soon I was actively trying to find natural and premium-quality essential oils and home-spa products. I had to jump through many hoops to find the products I wanted and realised that there was a lack of access to that in the market. I saw the opportunity to fill that huge void and one thing led to another, until I eventually created my own brand.

  5. How would you describe your company in one word, and why?

Evergreen – because we’re always growing with the customers and it is important to stay innovative and fresh.

  6. Where do you see HYSSES in 5 years’ time?

We are working towards our next goal of becoming an international household premium brand.

  7. What advice do you have for busy mums who want to start a business?

Have patience, determination, and learn about people management. Armed with these, I believe any mom can start and maintain a business she is passionate about.

  8. What is it like being a mother of four?

To be honest, any number of children after two doesn’t make too much of a difference to me since I already have 80+ staff whom I consider as my children too! At home, my husband and I no longer have a bed of our own with four kids piling on top of us. They can be a handful at times but I have come to fall in love with my noisy and energetic household.

  9. How do you make time for your children and manage your business at the same time?

Like any other working mum, I wake up at 8.00am to start the day. My first two boys are old enough to get ready on their own, but my two younger kids still require my help in the morning. When I’m in the office, I will call home for a quick check when I have the opportunity. I try to be home to spend time with my kids and tutor them as much as possible. I have a helper at home and my parents and in-laws regularly help us so I have time to concentrate on my business.

  10. How do you stay in such great shape despite having to juggle so many responsibilities?

I’ll be honest and admit that I barely have time to rest, let alone exercise. My hectic schedule is what keeps me in shape since I am always running around.

Have you always wanted to be a mumtrepreneur? Start working on your dream career today – it may not be as simple as how successful mums like Cheryl make it out to be, but every effort pays in the journey towards achieving your dreams.
